Whether you’re travelling by plane, car or bus, here you’ll find the best routes to Lafkos. The quickest options are usually via Thessaloniki, Skiathos or Nea Anchialos Airport near Volos. If you’re coming by car from Central or Western Europe, the ferry via Igoumenitsa can be a good alternative.

Directions from abroad

In general, traveling across Europe to Greece by train, car or bus is still sophisticated, as there is for example no cross-border rail service in Greece. It is time-consuming compared to the plane. However, if you have time, you can definitely get to the Pelion by public transport, especially by plane or using the Croatian platform Getbybus or the ships from Italy. The Greek bus network is also excellent and inexpensive. If you choose to come by plane, we recommend Thessaloniki, it’s much closer as Athens.

Attention
Our house is on the edge of a small village where there used to be no cars. The last 200 metres of the road may seem too narrow to some drivers. In this case, you will have to walk down from the car park by the church next to the village square to the house (about 3 minutes).

International directions to Lafkos by Airplane and Bus

Via Thessaloniki (about 3.5 hours)
If you plan to rent a car, do so directly, but bear in mind that in summer it can be very difficult to find one. I recommend due to very good own experience the Greek car rental company Avance Car Rental.

After landing, take a taxi (30 minutes) or the Bus X1 (50 minutes) from the airport to the bus terminal or train station. The bus stop is located in the departures area, in front of Terminal 1 entrance 3. Tickets cannot be purchased from the driver. The first bus leaves at 5.15 am and the last at 9.40 pm. The first bus back to the airport leaves at 6.10 am and the last at 10.40 pm. There are 2-3 buses per hour in each direction, Busplan. The X1 bus also passes the railway station.

From the bus terminal to Volos it takes 2.15 hours, Busplan. The first bus leaves at 8.30 am, the last at 11 pm. The first returns at 5.30 am and the last at 8.15 pm. See more. Urgent: Don’t forget to check the timetable and order your tickets at least 3 days in advance. See more.

From the train station you can get to Volos in 3-4 hours by a combination of train and Hellenic Railway bus. Trains run approximately every 1-2 hours. The first usually leaves at 5am and the last at 7.45pm, please visit the official website of Hellenic Train for information and to purchase tickets. Via Athens (about 5 hours).
The journey by bus from Athens, busplan is the longest and most complicated. I would recommend it only in case of emergency and would better advise a rental car. Recommend Avance Car Rental.

International directions by ship and land

Travel by ship
Travel by train or bus to Ancona, Brindisi or Venice. Continue by ship (Anek/Superfast) to Igoumenitsa. Then to Volos by bus via Ioanina, busplan, Trikala, busplan, Larissa, busplan, Volos, busplan to Lafkos. The Several buses run daily between the cities if the direct connection (for example at 15h Ioannina – Volos) does not work out.

Travel by land
Alternative travel to Vienna or Budapest and go ahead by bus. See more about the buses in that area.

Travelling domestically by bus or train

Buy your bus ticket coming from Thessaloniki, Athens, Patras, Ioannina, Larissa at the Volos bus station. Call in advance to reserve your ticket or buy it directly from the website.

Getting to Lafkos

KTEL buses and trains connect Volos, the port city on the Pagasetic Gulf, with Athens, Thessaloniki, Igoumenitsa and Larissa. From Volos, you continue by bus to southern Pelion.

Lafkos does not appear as a separate destination in the timetable. However, the village has two bus stops and is normally served by two routes heading towards Promiri or Trikeri. Much more frequent services are available to the nearby villages of Argalasti and Milina.

Please note. the bus to Trikeri does not always go via Lafkos – sometimes it travels directly along the coast and stops only in Milina. Make sure you check before boarding.

Important: The last suitable bus from Volos to the south pelion usually leaves at around 4.30 pm and 14.30 at the weekend. If you arrive in Volos later, you will you’ll need someone to pick you up.

Checking connections and buying tickets

To find the relevant local services, check the final destinations Argalasti, Promiri or Trikeri. Online booking may not be available for Lafkos itself; tickets for local services may need to be purchased at the bus station or from the driver.
